Summary0022031: KOTBS "No Escape" M3 no longer breaking on damage
DescriptionDisclaimer: this is second-hand information but I have been told No Escape no longer breaks on damage as of the ability rework and is now getting used and abused far more than before. Close this if that is incorrect.

------------

The final Mythic/live version of the ability was that this M3 ability lasted 5 seconds and was unbreakable. The duration was reduced from something higher to 5s in 1.3.2 (https://return-of-reconing.fandom.com/wiki/Game_Update_1.3.2), and this old bug-tracker ticket has a video from Mythic/live showing the duration lasting 5 seconds: https://bugs.returnofreckoning.com/view.php?id=18910. I have gone through all subsequent patch notes and cannot see it ever being changed again by Mythic.

On ROR, the root was changed to be breakable due to how powerful it was. This was a balance change, not a bug. The change occurred in patch 7/10/16 (https://wiki.returnofreckoning.com/Patch_Note_Summaries): "Marauder M1 root "Flames of Fate", White Lion M1 root "Ensnare" and Knight of the Blazing Sun M3 root "No Escape" 25% chance to break when target attacked". The patch-notes thread is here: https://www.returnofreckoning.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=190175

That patch was controversial - not the Knight changes but the M1 changes. The M1 changes - only the M1 changes - were reverted as per https://www.returnofreckoning.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17514&start=60#p190286 but it looks like the OP was updated to say all changes had been reverted. However, there was a bug ticket opened about the fact that No Escape broke on damage and the dev reply was that it was working as intended: https://bugs.returnofreckoning.com/view.php?id=11342

Based on this, I believe the root being breakable was an intentional balance change aimed at No Escape specifically due to how powerful an unbreakable AOE root is.

In addition, I was also not able to find any confirmation of when the duration changed to 10 seconds during Mythic/live even though the 1.4.8 data on the Ability Viewer website has it at 10 seconds, while the 1.3.5 data has it at 5 seconds: https://war-abilityviewer.dalen.io/ability/8069. This change is not mentioned in any Mythic patch notes. I know during the closed testing of the new ROR ability system that a number of patches were applied to the 1.4.8 data - I wonder if this was one of them?

From what I can determine, the following has happened:

1) The ability was originally 10 seconds and unbreakable on live
2) In 1.3.2 it was changed to 5 seconds and unbreakable for balance reasons
3) ROR accidentally implemented the 10 second unbreakable version
4) ROR then did a balance change to make it 10 seconds and breakable
5) In the recent ability system, it has unintentionally been reverted back to 10 seconds and unbreakable

Both Mythic and ROR have in the past determined that No Escape being 10 seconds and unbreakable was bad and made (different) changes for balance reasons, but the ability patch seems to have accidentally reverted the ROR balance version as there was no mention of this in the patch notes. If the intent was to match live then please make it 5 seconds and unbreakable, and if the intent was to match ROR's version then it needs to be 10 seconds and breakable. I cannot find any source that confirms that Mythic or ROR intended for it to end up as 10 seconds and unbreakable again.

There was also this bug ticket where someone was pointing out the ROR version had the wrong duration and should be 5 seconds but the commentators just replied about the damage and ignored the fact that the ticket subject line was actually about the duration being wrong (10 seconds instead of 5): https://bugs.returnofreckoning.com/view.php?id=8237

Trying to find if/when it changed on Mythic/live.

1.4.4: still 5 seconds. Timestamp shows someone showing the tooltip (https://youtu.be/0p9wEdhQGG0?t=372) - and about 10-15 seconds prior a different knight uses the ability and the golden prison effect plus root clearly lasts for just 5 seconds on the enemies.

I kept digging, found it in the 1.4.7 patch notes as it was a generic change: https://web.archive.org/web/20130127162904/http://ageofreckoning.warhammeronline.com/article/Game-Update-147-1018

All morale roots - both ST and AOE - were set back to 10 seconds. I cannot update the OP (no edit function or am I being blind?) so I'll put the amended timeline below:

1) The ability was originally 10 seconds and unbreakable on live
2) In 1.3.2 it was changed to 5 seconds and unbreakable for balance reasons
3) In 1.4.7 it was reverted back to 10 seconds and unbreakable for consistency reasons
4) ROR implemented the 1.4.7 version (10s and unbreakable)
5) ROR then changed it to 10 seconds and breakable for balance reasons
6) In the recent ability system, it has been reverted back to 10 seconds and unbreakable

In which case, the question is: was it intended that the new ability system implement the 1.4.7 unbreakable version or the ROR balanced version? If the intent was just to mirror what ROR was doing then the ability is now bugged as it no longer breaks as intended by the ROR team.

additional problem with it is that ror increase the cap so now one kotbs could root for 9 sec whole wb.

Being fixed by changing it to 3s, keeping the unbreakable part though.
